Maganda

Maganda (2020)

Two 1080p Videos

Maganda combines video and audio that base around the theme of colorism and beauty standards as a Filipina American. The title “Maganda” means beautiful in Tagalog. Ironically, in my life, hearing this word brought both flattery and disgust. The cycle of self-hate and self-acceptance is ongoing in life. It is in our human nature to compare ourselves to each other. The visuals of the piece display this cycle, but also tell a story about learning to love yourself. This video was inspired by real events in my life that told me to change my lifestyle to “help” me look prettier. The audio represents what Filipina Americans hear in their lives. I want the listener to hear and reflect on the journey of acceptance of our skin and bodies through words and phrases that are meaningful to Filipina Americans and me. Creating this piece could not have been done without my beautiful friends, who are shown in video. I am grateful for them for being vulnerable and courageous.

Maganda is a celebration of brown skin.

Maganda is a journey of acceptance.

Maganda ka. You are Beautiful.

Senior Thesis Behind

There was a lot of planning pre-production and during production. Setting up the story line was the most hardest part because I had to make notes on my own experience and drawing what each part would look like.

This was all done during the time period before the 2019-2020 school year and during Fall Semester 2019. I had to film the objects in the video and then schedule filming for my subjects. Filming took 3 months from Nov.2019 to Feb.2020. Once the pandemic hit the US, I had to edit using only what I had at home which is my Macbook Pro and a Gaomon drawing pad.

Although it was originally supposed to exhibit at Dominican University, the Senior Thesis Website became public on May 7, 2020.
